I read a good deal of books published for adults that explore an issue, make an argument, investigate a question, or lead to a new understanding of ourselves or the world we live in. I'm passionate about exploring the world and ourselves and can provide authors of these kinds of books with a thoughtful approach to making their manuscripts convincing and complete. Excellent writing and thinking makes these books what they are; they're also a good deal of work in research. If you're writing this kind of book you have to be willing to put in a good deal of time. I'm particularly interested in sociological, psychological, and scientific questions. Education, food, relationships, family, community, religion, culture, animals, racial relations--these things and more interest me. Inevitably many books like this have some level of political point of view; in general I vote Democrat, I consider myself a feminist, but I am interested in opposing points of view. As a rule I applaud the trend that has made these kinds of books often at least a small part memoir; if you are thoughtful and truthful you can bring warmth to a subject that makes it relatable and pleasurable to read. Depending on the subject these kinds of books require credentials of all different kinds; I'm interested in what people in the trenches have to say as well as what people with relative august credentials have to say. If you're going to need to talk to a lot of people it helps to have experience interviewing. If you're going to spend a lot of time in the library it helps to have experience researching. I'm definitely not interested in books in this area that aren't written for a lay, trade audience. I want to be able and eager to understand your book. There are so many subjects that non-experts can enjoy learning about.
